Garston Wood & Martin Down

Corn Bunting ( Copyright TD Wright )
"Ah", I hear you say, " This is yet another Lesvos post, is it? We don't have Corn Bunts in the Axe Valley..." . Well, yes that's true. BUT- a little drive into Dorset, or in this case the Hampshire/Dorset border at Martin Down, and Hey Presto the Corn Bunts appear! Singing too, the 'jangling keys' that I used to hear in the London Borough of Croydon in the 1980s ( though sadly no more ) still abound on the Hampshire chalk...

Incredibly, I got tired of checking CornBunt after CornBunt on Lesvos when looking for more interesting species there, but when I zoomed in on an English one at Martin Down I savoured the moment! As the French say - "In Rarity is Beauty" - and these are in such serious decline in Britain that we treasure them now. Let's hope that strongholds like this will be allowed to flourish. Also present were singing Yellowhammers, Whitethroats and Turtle Doves( another bird we lack in Colyton!). Stonechats were also about and then, to top it all off, a Hobby performed distantly, grabbing insects on the wing. I must go there again...
It's got ample parking...  and RSPB Garston Wood is nearby, where the Bluebells and Wild Garlic surrounded a few of these...
